The Cost

They were tired, living in filth, sick and had very little provisions. This is how the first group of Pilgrims met the New World. They faced a new hardship that none of us can understand in today's culture. They were used to farm land and they were staring at miles of beaches on the New England shore line. They were afraid, exhausted and had been blown 500 miles off course. So the leaders pulled everyone together and reminded them of their purpose. While still on the Mayflower they penned, "For the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith."

As we enter into this Thanksgiving week in the United States, I am reminded of the people who were determined and strong enough to stand, fight, work and persevere so that we might have the rights, liberties and pursuit of happiness that we do today. It is important to stop and give thanks for those who have gone before us. This experiment in democracy started with a purpose and the determination of a few called and committed Pilgrims. You don't have to agree with their faith but you can never question their tenacity and strength in pursing their mission.

I am thankful that our country is one of diversity, strength, hope and faith. I am thankful that we are free to express ourselves and to disagree with one another. I am thankful that we can share our faith, religion, beliefs or lack thereof, with others.

I realize that our freedom came at a great cost to many…. I am thankful for the difference they made.
